"Mother's Embrace" Canopy

Translated by Parkson Wong

(Chinese version¡y¶ý¶ý¼l¡z²¤¶by§õ¼y²»Chin Lee

was published on EHVA Newsletter (31), Sept. 2005)

Proper balance of activity and rest is of utmost importance in maintaining a healthy body. Getting a good night of sleep sometimes can be very elusive. After years of research, EHVA has developed a canopy that can help people relax and improve the quality of rest. Five prototypes were built and trials started, the initial feedbacks are all very promising. This canopy helps people feel more secure, just like a baby in a Mother's embrace, thus it is named "Mother's embrace."

"Mother's Embrace" canopy structure

The "Mother's embrace" canopy consists of four parts. The moveable canopy structure is provided by the interconnecting electroplated iron pipes and pillars. (See Figure 1)

¡@

(Figure 1. Main Structure)

¡@

On top of the main structure is an acrylic dome. The dome is made up of a rectangular sheet with a hole in the middle and a hollow hemisphere. (See figure 2)

¡@

(Figure 2. Acrylic Dome)

¡@

After the acrylic dome is installed on to the top of the main structure, place the cloth canopy over the structure and we are almost done. (See Figure 3)

¡@

(Figure 3. Finished Structure)

The soothing back lit light is a vital part of the "Mother's embrace" canopy. The light needs to be focused and projected onto the 12 o'clock position of the dome. (See Figure 4). After the back-lit light is set up, users can put a bed underneath the canopy to sleep in or sit and meditate underneath the canopy.

The concept

The image of a mother cradling a sleeping baby has long been a symbol of peace and calmness. Once born, babies are no longer as secure as they were in their Mother's womb. Nevertheless, a Mother's embrace still provide security for every child. We try to create the feeling of returning to a Mother's embrace for those sitting or lying under this canopy. Feeling secure allows people to put down their guard and start to relax. This is how "Mother's embrace" help people improve their quality of rest and replenish their energy.

The construction of the "Mother's embrace" is based on the ancient Chinese observation of nature; "round symbolizes heaven and square symbolizes earth." hence the round dome and the square frames. Sitting or lying in "Mother's embrace", between heaven and earth, one feels fused with the universe. It also feels like returning to the little universe of a Mother's womb, secure and peaceful.

During the evolution journey, primitive men moved their habitat from trees to caves. Caves provided security and the survival advantages to mankind. Cave men represent the dawn of civilization. The pillars on the sides of the "Mother's embrace" symbolize the walls of a cave. Lying in "Mother's embrace" will provide people with security as caves provided our ancestors with security.

Light is a source of energy, and symbolizes life. First, the light shines from the ground up, symbolizing the connection between a baby and his or her mother, also symbolizing the connection between human and earth. Mother and earth provide nourishment and the gift of life to the baby and the human. The light then reflects back from the dome. This soothing light from above establishes the connection between human and heaven - the heavenly objects in the sky had provided guidance to our ancestors and security against darkness. Lying in a Mother's embrace, fused with and connected to the universe, people are at ease and relaxed. Peace and harmony are therefore obtained.

Experiment results

Sixty EHVA members participated in the experiment. The height of each participant is measured before lying underneath the "Mother's embrace" canopy for 15 minutes. The height of the participant is measured again afterwards and the results are compared to see if the height has increased. The subjective feelings about the mind and body are also recorded. The results are tabulated below:

Effects Yes (# of people) No (# of people)

Note:

  • Height increases ranged from 0.5 cm to 1.5 cm As people get older, the amount of fluid in the discs will diminish slightly and as a result will get shorter. Relaxation improves the cerebrospinal fluid circulation and replenishes the fluid inside the intervertebral discs. Hence, height increase is an objective measure of relaxation.

  • Comfortable feeling: calm and undisturbed by the surroundings.

    Kelp Daikon Soup

    Ingredients:

    Kelp

    1 long, thick strip

    Daikon (medium size)

    ½ (1½ lb)

    Water

    9 cups

    Seasoning:

    Miso paste (bean paste)

    1 Tbsp

    Procedure:

    1. Cut kelp into sections, soak in water for 5 minutes. Discard water. Rinse kelp gently. (The viscous juice on the kelp is helpful for our health. Do not wash it off. Good quality kelp will have a lot of viscous juice once soaked in water.)
    2. Cut soaked kelp into 1.5 in x 1 in pieces.
    3. In a pot, boil 9 cups of water and kelp pieces with high heat. Turn to medium heat when the soup boils.
    4. Peel daikon. Rinse and cut daikon into ? in cubes.
    5. Add cubed daikon to the kelp soup. Continue to cook for another 30-40 minutes until the daikon is soft.
    6. Mix miso paste with 1-2 Tbsp of cold boiled water. Add the mixture to the above soup. Mix well. Ready to serve.

    Servings:

    6 persons

    Note:

There are various brands of miso paste and Kelp. Adjust the amount of miso accordingly. It's important to keep the sodium amount low. The viscous juice of kelp could help prevent hardening of the blood vessel.
